Squaring Complexity with Our Planning and the Capacity of Our Evaluation Tools

2013 EENP Forum

Day 2: Sept 23, 2013 • 1:15pm • Ballard Hall Large Conference Room

By Jonny Morell

There seems to be a mismatch between the complex systems we deal with and the capacity of our traditional evaluation tools. In reality our traditional tools are often powerful, even in complex settings. When? How? We will explore these questions in a series of mini-lectures and heavy group problem solving.

Based on his hands-on evaluation, Jonny has been developing methods for evaluating unintended consequences, the use of complex systems in evaluation, and the relationships among program theory, metrics, and methodology. He is the author of Evaluation in the Face of Uncertainty: Anticipating Surprise and Responding to the Inevitable. Jonny is Director of Evaluation at the Fulcrum Corporation, Editor of Evaluation and Program Planning, and a Board member of AEA.
