Incorporating values in evaluation; valuing environmental policies and programs

EEN Special Projects

Project Description:

Hi everyone! Building off the D.C. EEN conference last summer as well as a terrific session at the AEA conference last week, I would like to propose a study group to explore ideas posed by some of the great thinkers in our discipline and how we might best balance the multiple values, cultures, and needs that arise in our work. The idea is to move away from evaluation as a monitoring practice predominantly concerned with methodology and turn instead to larger issues of public interest. Some refer to it as the ‘zero question’ — is this the right thing to do?

Having done something like this once before, I’m envisioning something like a 5-month time frame, a once a month conference call discussion based on 2 or 3 hours of reading each time — but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you are interested, please share your ideas both for sources you’d like to read as well as what time frame would work for you or any other thoughts you might have. Perhaps we could get up and running sometime around the start of the new year. Thanks, all. – Nancy
